ARMED ROBBERIES NET FRENCH BANDITS £68,000
PARIS, August 2 (Rec. 11 a.m.).— Two armed robberies netted bandits about £68,000 today. Four masked men, spraying a street in Deauville with a burst of tommy-gun fire, escaped with loot worth about £45,000 after a lunchtime robbery at a leading jeweller’s shop. The men drove to the shop at a moment when the street opposite the casino was almost deserted after a shower of rain. One stood guard near the casino terrace. Another broke the front window of the shop, ransacked it and the remaining two burst into the shop and held up the staff and emptied the glass cases.
An assistant tried to seize one man, but was struck on the head with a gun butt. • A street sweeper, who rushed forward with a broom, changed his mind when the gang opened fire. Two bank messengers were robbed by two armed men of about £23,000 which they were taking to the Bank of France in Aix-en-Provence. Their car was stopped by another drawn across the street near the bank. Aimed with revolvers, the bandits forced the bank driver to go to a quiet suburb, W’here they took the cash and sped off.
