“On what grounds can you oppose compulsory military training in New Zealand when Russia has conscription?” This i question was replied to by Mrs Connie Birchfield, a member of national committee of the New Zealand Communist Party, at a meeting in Palmerston North. She said that if New Zealand were politically controlled after the manner of the U.S.S.R. and if all other aspects of Russian life were accepted in this country, then New Zealand Communists would also be prepared to accept compulsory military training in peace time.
