GUARD PINNED UNDER DERAILED WAGON FOR OVER AN HOUR
WELLINGTON, August 1 (P.A.) —The guard of a goods train derailed at a Napier level crossing today was pinned under a wagon for an hour and a half before he could be dug out. He is Harold Oliver, aged 48. He is believed to have suffered injuries to the head, hip, and leg. The accident happened when the train ’ struck a heavily laden timber truck at the Ellison street crossing at 2 p.m. Five empty shingle wagons were derailed. Mr Oliver was pinned by the leH leg under one of the wagons in such a position that rescuers were afraid to move the -truck in case it collapsed on him. Later jacks and a. crane took the strain of the truck’s weight while rescuers dug underneath Mr Oliver, eased a stretcher beneath him. and then released his leg. He was given medical attention before being rushed to hospital in an ambulance which had been standing by for more than an hour.
