STOLE A BAG OF RICE

AUCKLAND, This Day (P.A.).—A plea of guilty to a charge of embezzling a bag of rice, worth 235, belonging to the union Steam Ship Company was entered in the Police Court today by Maviu Gonervou, aged 32 a member of the crew of the motor-ship Lautoka. The police said Gonervou had a wife and five children. His home was in Fiji. While the ship was in Melbourne a quantity of rice was pillaged and during the trip to Auckland one bag was traced to the accused. The Lautoka’s master said Gonervou had been taking too much liquor lately. The Magistrate, Mr J. Morling, imposed a sentence of two months’ imprisonment and directed that Gonervou be placed aboard his ship if it sailed before the expiry of the prison term.
