Social Security Anomaly

Sir—Under the, present social security system, a person when off work on account of sickness does not receive any sick benefit for the first week. Payment begins only after the first week. To my mind this is a very grave anomaly. A married man with a family has his responsibilities to fulfil. The expenditure for the household for that first week has to bet met, and I ask where is such money to come from? I think this rule should be revised and the amount should be made payable from the first day a person ceases work owing to illness, until such date as he or she resumes duty. It is high time people realised this fact and have such matter represented to the powers that be for consideration.— Yours, etc., TAXPAYER. Greymouth, July 30.
