TRAFFIC DEATHS IN MAY HIGHEST FOR TWO YEARS

WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.).— Fatal traffic accidents in May resulted in 25 deaths, the highest monthly total for two years. Releasing these figures today, the Minister of Transport, Mr Hackett, said that already this year 96 people had been killed on the roads, an increase of 16 over the same period last year. Most of the additional fatalities, he said, occurred in May when the weather and light conditions were deteriorated.

The returns to hand from the present headlight tests showed, he said, that of 4000 vehicles checked over 500 had faulty headlights. This, the Minister added, was a shocking state of affairs and he had instructed that these checks were to be continued and that the offenders were to be issued with traffic offence notices.

The Minister appealed to drivers to exercise additional care during the King’s Birthday week-end, when there would be considerably increased traffic, and reiterated his appeal for safe winter driving.
