RAIN TODAY ENDS WATER SHORTAGE IN GREY DISTRICT
This morning for the third time this month, a fall of rain was recorded at Greymouth. Today for the first time in May, people on their way to work experienced wet conditions, both previous falls of rain this month having occurred at the weekend and at night. The rain which, occurred this morning, totalled just over one quarter of an inch by 9 o’clock, but this was enough to end. the water shortage that had developed in many country townships and districts, including Blackball, where this week water- had to be cartered to supply “dry” households with a domestic supply. Considerably more rain will be required this month to be of any benefit to the harbour, as a flood in the Grey river’ is needed to scour the growing bar which is exercising an influence on the cargoes carried by ships trading at the port. So far this month little more than two inches of rain has fallen, the lightest for many years. Yesterday was only the second day this month on which the sun did not shine .
