TONIGHT: “Call Northside 777,” starring James Stewart, Richard Conte, Helen Walker. This is the story that was waiting to be unleashed by Chicago Times reporter McNeal... a story that lay smoldering in the heart and hopes of a mother—Tillie Wiecek—whose son was sentenced to a life term in Illinois State Penitentiary for the murder of a policeman in 1932. And it is the story whose telling Frank Wiecek fought against—in the beginning—so that his innocent wife and child be spared. This is the story whose secret was locked behind the cold, bitter lips of Wanda Skutnik who swore to the jury that Frank was the killer, and then disappeared. It is the story that some police and government officials tried to hush up to “maintain confidence in law and order.” And it is the story that a crusading newspaper and its fighting city editor Kelly said must—and would —be told.
