CALIELL AGAIN: AMERICANS IN TOKIO ACCUSED
, LONDON, May 23 (Rec. 1 p.m.).— Some prominent Americans in Tokio were actively engaged in a conspiracy to circumvent Australia’s immigration laws, the Australian Minister for Immigration, Mr A. A. Calwell, told the British United Press correspondent in s London today.
Mr Calwell said these Americans included the chief of General MacArthur’s legal section, Colonel Lava Carpenter. He added that the conspiracy was to help a United States citizen, Corporal Lorenzo Gamboa, who was born of Filipino parents, to enter Australia to visit his Australian wife in Melbourne. Mr Calwell declared-: “There have been manoeuvring and intrigue in the Gamboa case. It became clear to us that Gamboa was not merely seeking an opportunity to visit his wife. He wanted permanent residence. When this application was refused, Gamboa and his friends began to seek ways of circumventing the Australian Government, making us look ridiculous.
“Colonel Carpenter and certain other Americans in Tokio have been trying to use the Gamboa case to discredit us and heap ridicule upon a long-established policy which is the law of the land in Australia.” Mr Calwell claimed that Colonel Carpenter had been trying to speak for General MacArthur, but General MacArthur had never personally made representations to the Australian Government about Corporal Gamboa.
