State Flats To Be Built For Pensioners
WELLINGTON, May 20 (P.A.).— In announcing the commencement in Auckland and Wellington of the construction of blocks of flats for the accomodation of pensioners, the Minister cf Works (Mr R. Semple) in a statement today said that these schemes would be followed almost immediately by others in all parts of the Dominion. The flats would be specially designed for the needs of elderly persons. In Auckland, the construction oi 56 units in Mount Roskill had already been commenced, Mr Semple said. In Wellington, the erection of 22 units at Bell road, Lower Hutt, would be commenced next week. Those two blocks should be completed in four or five months. Plans for a further block of nine units in Ponsonby road, Auckland, on land given the Government by the Auckland City Council, have been finalised, and construction should be commenced in the next few weeks. Plans wer v e also nearly completed for 40 units in Wellington city, and construction would start in the next few weeks. In Christchurch, plans were ready for 40 units to be erected on a site fronting Riccarton road, and commencement cn these buildings would be made within the next two weeks, Mr Semple said. Endeavours were being made to secure a suitable site in Dunedin and in other towns throughout the Dominion.
Advice has been received to the effect that 2654 food parcels of a total weight of 26,0911 b. shipped by the vessel “Lassells” from Lyttelton on March 25 arrived in the United Kingdom on the 17th instant. The shipment comprised parcels posted in the Canterbury, Marlborough and West Coast districts during the period March 18-24.
