NAVAL SHIP ARRIVES AT CAMPBELL ISLAND
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A lone skua, the scavenger of the Antarctic, circled H.M.N.Z.S. Pukaki as she entered Perseverance harbour, Campbell Island, a few minutes before eight o’clock this morning, states a radio message from the Pukaki today. The ruins of what had been a sheep pen were seen as the ship anchored off Beeman hill at the mouth of Tucker cove, but there was no other sign of life. The first ashore with welcome mail for the staff were the relief pai;ty, Messrs A. J. Matheson, R. J. Langbein and H. Naylor. A survey to find a suitable place for the building of a small stores jetty as close as possible to the site to be chosen for the proposed meteorological station at the head of Perseverance harbour will be undertaken by the Pukaki’s navigation officer, Lieutenant Brian Wainright. Accompanied by Cadet. J. A.’ Burns, of Auckland, Lieutenant Wainright will make a survey in ’ the ship’s whaler, using a special leadline of 10 fathoms made by Petty Officers E. Hessey, of Auckland, and Les Niven, the frigate’s ‘ chief quartermaster.
