Lull In Fighting On Battle Front In China
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) SHANGHAI, April 26. With the exception of harassing raids by small Communist bands in scattered areas, there has been little fighting in the past 24 hours in the Shanghai-Hangchow-Nanking triangular area, according to official and independent reports today. One report,. however, says the Communist forces advancing toward Soochow have been halted by strong Nationalist units a few miles west of that city, where heavy fighting was raging late this afternoon. Other Communist forces, advancing from Wuhu, captured Suanchen, 35 miles south-west of Wuhu. Suanchen was the site of Government headquarters following the withdrawal from Wuhu. Meanwhile, a third Communist column, operating from the NankingShanghai railway, captured Ihing, thus cutting the Nanking-Hangchow highway. The railway administration in Shanghai said the services were normal along the Shanghai-Hangchow line. . • . . The Shanghai garrison announced that curfew passes were no longer usable. It is believed that this measure has been taken to enable the military to carry out more stringent patrols. The garrison authorities executed two Chinese “humour-mongers” for spreading false reports.
