Determined to win the friendship of Rudolph, who considers him a coward, Rodger persuades him to take him on a climb on to a mountain peak. Rodger misses his footing and crashes on to a ledge below. Rudolph, suspended in mid-air, supported only by a rope around the boy’s waist, realises that one or both will be killed. He deliberately cuts the rope and falls to his death. Roger is rescued and taken back to the inn by Magda and the village doctor, who is in Jove with her.
