OBITUARY Mr John Tennent

The death of one of . Gre y m ° ut^ eldest, and best-known businessmen, Mi John Tennent, occurred at his lesidence, Nelson street, on Saturday even IU Mr Tennent, who was 72 years of age, was born at Lanarkshire, Scotland, but came to New Zealand at the age oi seven, his father being one of the eajiy managers of the Brunner mine. As a young man Mr Tennant entered thlewellery trade at Greymouth under Mi Horace Lloyd, Mawhera Quay and, after acquiring the business, conducted it under his own name. More recently, he opened a branch of the business at Hokitika. Mr Tennent was actively associateu with many district organisations and was a former member of the Greymouth Borough Council, Hospital Board and Grey Main School Committee, being chairman of the latter for a long period. He was also president of the West Coast Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Association, and he was the immediate past president of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemens Union, but illness prevented him from acting as host at the championship meeting held at Greymouth in January. He was for many years a Justice of the Peace, an Elder of St John’s Presbyterian Church and a member of the Westland Presbytery. He was also a member of Masonic and Druids Lodges and of the Rotary Club. Besides his wife, Mr Tennent leaves one son, William (Greymouth) and four daughters, Mesdames L. F. Anderson, I. E. Manning, and Miss Molly Tennent (all of Greymouth), and Mrs W. D. McLeod (Christchurch). He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs I. Boustridge (Greymouth) and Mrs A. Dean (Auckland) ; and one brother, Robert (South Africa). There are eight grandchildren. There was a large attendance at the Ifuneral which took' place yesterday afternoon at the Karoro cemetery. The services at the residence and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. T. G. Campbell. The pall-bearers represented St John’s Church, the Masonic Lodge, Athletic Union, the Rotary Club and the staff of the, business. Reference to the death of Mr Tennent was made at the Anzac Day service at the Greymouth Technical High School yesterday and those present stood in silence as a mark of respect. Mrs Violet Acker The death occurred at Greymouth last evening, following a long illness, of Mrs Violet Elizabeth” Acker, wife of Mr Arthur Acker, of Shakespeare street. Born at Orepuki, Southland, 44 years ago, Mrs Acker came to Greymouth with her husband nine years ago. Prior to her marriage she was a member of the staff of the Post and Telegraph Department. Besides her husband, she leaves three daughters, Misses June and Lois Acker and Mrs N. Newton (all of Greymouth). She is also survived by her mother, Mrs J. Popham (Southland), two sisters, Mesdames J. Shaw and F. Boyd (Invercargill) and one brother, Mr D. A. Barclay (Papanui). The funeral will take place at the Karoro cemetery tomorrow afternoon.
