Jhe Canterbury Rugby League’s senior competition began on Saturday, when first round matches in the Vivian Cup series were played. Results were: — Christchurch 35, Woolston 5; Papanui 31, Addington 8; Sydenham 28, Linwood 10; Prebbleton 52, Riccarton 0; Hornby 14, Sydenham A 5.
Canterbury Rugby Football The Canterbury Rugby Union’s 1949 season was opened on Saturday with competition matches in senior and senior reserve and friendly games between teams in all other grades. The weather was fine and the games were played on hard and fast grounds which made for a tricky ball. Following are the results of Saturday's games:— Marist 11, University 9; Old Boys 16, Christchurch 16; Albion 9, Linwood 5; Technical 14, New Brighton 3; Merivale 6, Sunnyside-Spreydon 3.
Harley Shield Matches The second series of matches in the qualifying round for the Harley Shield Association Football championship were played in Christchurch on Saturday afternoon. Results:—Thistle 5, Western 1; Rangers 5, Technical B 1; Technical A 6, Wigram 0; Watersiders 5, Shamrock 2; Celtic 3, Nomads 2. Championship points are:—Thistle 4, Watersiders 4, Technical A 2, Rangers 2, Celtic 2, Shamrock 2, Wigram 2, Western 2, Nomands 0. Technical B 0.
