Newspaper Holiday The Greymouth Evening Star will not be published on April 13 (Easter Monday).
Ration Coupons The current butter coupons, Nos. 25, 26, and 27, are redeemable until May 8. The April petrol coupons, Nos. 28, 29, and 30, are available at full face value, while the March coupons, Nos. 25, 26 and 27, can also be used at full face value until the end of this month.
Problem For Builder Severe seepage is being encountered by the contractor excavating on the site of Hokitika’s new post office, preparatory to constructing the foundations of the building. It is possible that a pumping system, similar to that recently used in an attempt to lower the water in the Arahura dredge pond, may have to be used to allow the work to continue.
South Westland Request A remit urging the extension of the hospital request session conducted each Sunday by radio station 3YZ Greymouth, was submitted by the Kaniere Women’s Institute to the annual meeting of the South Westland Federation of Women’s Institutes held at Hokitika this week. The federation adopted the remit, and arranged for representatiions to be made to the National Broadcasting Service.
Disturbance In Theatre There was nothing more objectionable than hooliganism in a public place, said Mr H. J. Thompson, S.M. in the Magistrate’s Court at Westport in convicting two youths, Sidney Braggins, 'of Denniston, and Alfred John Johnson, of Westport, on charges of disorderly behaviour in the Victoria Theatre, Westport, on March 18. In fining each of the youths £3, the Magistrate said he hoped there would be no repetition. Braggins pleaded not guilty and conducted his own defence but Johnson pleaded guilty.
Whisky For Dominion One hundred tons of spirits, including 50 tons of Scotch whisky, for New Zealand consumption, are expected to arrive at Auckland next Tuesday in the Shaw Savill liner Waiwera. Of this consignment, which is calculated in tons measurement, the shipping near equivalent of tons weight, 27 tons of whisky are destined for Wellington. Shipping officials said that the consignment was one of several similar shipments which had arrived or were arriving within a short period. The 100-ton shipment is part of 12,000 tons of general cargo from Liverpool.
