COBDEN SCHOOL COMMITTEE: PROBLEMS DISCUSSED
The problems facing the Cobden School Committee, particularly in connection with its relations with the Canterbury Education Board, were discussed at a meeting of the committee on Monday, when Messrs C. E. James and R. W. Sansom, newly-ap-pointed members of the board, were in attendance.
Both members expressed sympathy with Cobden’s position, and promised fully to support the committee’s representations, particularly with respect to the need tor new class rooms and convenience block. They also agreed to back the committee’s request for authority to arrange for local labour to carry out repairs at the school.
It. was reported that authority had been received for the committee to proceed with the constellation of a radio system at the school and of an electric sewing machine for the tuition of senior girl pupils. Sub-committees were appointed to proceed with the heating of the School Hall and with the installation of a portable stage. Four admissions had brought the roll number to 272 reported the headmaster, Mr L. B. Galbraith, who stated that with four more admissions certain this term, the school was bound to be entitled to another teacher early next term. “The problem of finding somewhere to place this teacher is, therefore, becoming urgent,” he added.
The committee agreed to form a working-bee to carry out urgent minor work mentioned in the report.
