ATHLETICS Auckland Man Sets New Record For Broad Jump

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

The outstanding performance of the opening day of the New Zealand amateur athletic championships at Lancaster Park yesterday was given by the Auckland athlete, W. B. Hough, who broke the New Zealand record when he covered 24ft 4in in the broad jump. The previous best jump made in New Zealand was 23ft login, by the Australian. J. P. Metcalfe, when he toured New Zealand in 1934. The previous best performance by a New Zealander was 23ft 9j-in, made last year by S. R. Dawson (Otago). The New Zealand standard jump is 22ft. D. Dephoff (Canterbury) won the championship last year with a jump of 22ft 6in. Yesterday Hough had about six jumps. Each time he broke the New Zealand record, and four times he covered more than 24 feet. The next best performance in the championship was made by K. Forsythe (Otago), with 22ft lOiffn. D. Dephoff was third with a jump of 22fi 4in. Dephoff pulled a muscle in his last jump, and was unable to make another effort to beat either Hough or Forsythe, and is unlikely to take an active part in athletics, for some time.

Auckland Successes

A feature of the meeting was the success of Auckland athletes, whe were prominent in most of the championships decided, and alsc qualified for the finals which will be run today. In events that have been finished, Auckland gained 16 points to 12 scored by Wellington, eight by West Coast (North Island), seven by Otago, and two by Canterbury, in the competition for the championship shield. Canterbury made a poor showing in the field events, and the only points scored were by Dephoff, third in the long jump, and J. E. Drummond, third in the pole vault. B. Steel and J. E. Millar have qualified for the final of the 880 yards, E. G. Ayson and D. S. Batten for the 10C yards, J. S. Williams for the 220 yards hurdles, Batten for the 22C yards, M. R. Craighead and vV. R. Wilkinson for the mile, and Batten and J. W. Sutherland for the 440 yards. The outstanding hurdler yesterday was L. R. Smith (Wellington), who won his heat of the- 120 yards in 15.2 sec and the 220 yards in 24.95ec. In each race he had a very comfortable win and confirmed the good impression he made at Wellington last Saturday.

Batten gave three sterling performances to win heats in the 100 ; yards in 9.9 sec, the 220 yards in i 21.8 sec, and the 440 yards in 50.3 sec, I and he should earn points for Canterbury in the finals of these events I today. S. McKenzie (West Coast, North Island) ran an excellent race to win the first heat of the 880 yards in Imin 57.8 sec. In the second lap he opened up a break of 12 yards on B. Steel (Canterbury), after running the first 440 yards in 57sec. He won nicely. It did not appear that Steel was doing any more than was necessary to qualify for the final. A much steadier pace was set in the second heat, the first 440 yards being run in 62 l-ssec and the full distance in Imin 59.45ec. A great race in the final may be expected. The six miles championship ended in a hollow win for the West Coast (North Island) distance runner, W. J. Wells, who came home with a great sprint after he had lapped some of the other starters.
