EARTH TREMORS SHAKE TOWNS IN AUSTRALIA

(Rec. 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day.

Further earth tremors have shaken the towns of Dalton and Gunning in south-eastern New South Wales. Dalton had 18 tremors between midnight and 2 a.m. today. Many Dalton people spent the* night in the open, fearing to enter their homes. They experienced particularly heavy shakes at 11 a.m. yesterday and at 1.30 a.m. today, and at 2.5 a.m. when three came in quick succession. Gunning, ten miles away, had a heavy tremor at 0.30 a.m. today and mild shakes were recurring at 15minute intervals. Father D. O’Connell, director of the Riverview Observatory, said the people in the Dunning and Dalton districts could expect tremors for the next two or three days. Father O’Connell said that earth tremors like those experienced yesterday were caused by the slipping of millions of tons of rock below the earth’s surface. ‘‘Tremors have occurred along a fault in the geological formation and Gunning is apparently located above such a fault,” he added. “Australia is in no danger of experiencing earthquakes, though earth tremors may continue for an incalculable time.”
