MEAT FOR EXPORT: KILLINGS SHOW SUBSTANTIAL DROP

Export meat killings for the period October 1, 1948, to February 26, 1949, show a substantial drop of 8,807 ions compared with the corresponding period for last season, states the New Zealand Meat Producers Board. The killing season promises to be long drawn out, especially in the North Islands, but it is expected that from now on, the deficiency in tonnage will be gradually made up. The individual Island killings of sheep and lambs are interesting as they to a great extent reflect the seasonal conditions in the respective areas. In the North Island the kill is 393,725, carcases fewer than for the same period last year resulting in a deficiency of 3,509 tons of exportable meat. The South Island position is just the reverse. Increased killings there total 252,243 carcases equal to an additional 4989 tons of exportable meat.

Average weights to date are excellent, those for lambs being just over 1-jlbs per carcase in excess of the previous season. Beef killings to date are negligible.
