ROYAL TAN AND EXCELLENCY FOR TRENTHAM Feature Events On Tomorrow’s Card
■ The Wellington Cup winner Royal Tan appeared to be in need of a race when he paraded for the Autumn Handicap at Trentham last week, but his finishing run into fourth place, after being in the middle of the field at the straight entrance, was one of the features of the race, apart from the efforts of the place-getters. On that performance the brother to Bruce should be well in the limelight in the £3OOO President’s Handicap on the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow. The actual favourite for the race may be the northerner, Lord Revel, who went under only in the last stride to The Grate in the Autumn Handicap, after making all the pace. Tie now meets The Grate on 51b better terms and this may be sufficient to enable him to turn, the tables on D. P. Wilson’s candidate. King’s Ransom, a good third last week, is another whose chance will be favoured. He is in first-class form and has a great record at Trentham.
King’s Ransom was always handy last week and finished well in third place, without actually looking like beating the two who finished ahead of him. He carries 11b more (9.9) tomorrow, but he meets The Grate on 41b better terms than last week. On a weight basis, King’s Ransom, a massive horse who carries weight well, has undeniable chance. Langham was second favourite last week with W. J. Broughton in the saddle, but he faded out of the picture over the concluding stages after occupying a prominent place to the last furlong. A lazy track worker, Langham would probably be improved by the race, and he may run on better tomorrow.
Avenger was one of the betterbacked- horses last week and he showed promise of winning a good race by his strong finishing run into sixth place behind Langham. The class appears to be a bit beyond Money Lender at this stage. The Winmore gelding won well on the first day of the Dunedin meeting, but his effort last week when Arctotis was successful, was only moderate. Lord Manna is the problem horse of the field because he is also engaged at the. Taranaki meeting, where he appears to have an undeniable chance in the principal event. He has won five races in a row, the latest at Hawera last week, when he outclassed a useful field. If he is
produced at Trentham he will be one of the better-backed candidates.
The public may sum’ up in favour of Royal Tan, Lord Revel and King’s Ransom, with the Wilson bracket, The Grate and Frances, also in demand. The following horses should race prominently:—
Ngaio Hurdles.—Zulu Boy, Voltage, Baksoon. N.I. Challenge Stakes.—Excellency, Tauloch, Golden Spa.
