(Rec. 10.10 a.m.) BERLIN, March 9. A formal welcome and a box of chocolates today awaited the 50,000 th passenger to be evacuated from blockaded Berlin since the air-lift began last June. A small girl, selected to represent the 50,000 passengers flown out of Berlin under the Russian ’blockade, was seen off at Berlin’s British Gatow airport by the base commander. She flew to Lubeck, in the British zone, where the station commander was waiting to welcome her and present her with a box of chocolates.
The British Military Governor of Germany, General Sir Brian Robertson, has . received, from the Prime Minister, Mr Attlee, a message congratulating all concerned on the Berlin air-lift and paying a tribute to the co-operation between the American, English, and Commonwealth Air Force crews and German workers.
The message adds: “We can look forward to an increasing flow of supplies so long as the blockade makes it necessary. The operation, I am sure, will go down in history as a tremendous contribution towards the maintenance of free institutions in Europe.” _____
