RUSSIA COMPLICATES TRIESTE SITUATION

NEW YORK, February 17.

In a surprise move, Mr Jacob Malik (Russia) told the Security Council today that Russia would accept the British nominee, Colonel Hermann Slueckiger, as governor of Trieste. Slueckiger, who is now Swiss Minister to Moscow, was nominated by Britain in September,-1947. The United States, Britain, and France announced in 1948, on the eve of the Italian elections, that they favoured giving Trieste to Italy. The United Press says Mr Malik’s action has confronted the Western Powers with the choice of complying with the terms of the Italian peace treaty or discarding one of their own nominees, purely because Russia has agreed to accept him.
