After an almost unbroken association of 58 years, commencing’ as a paper runner in. 1890, Mr A. G. Gunn recently retired from the staff of the GreymouthEvening Star. He was met “around the stone” this morning by members of the staff and was presented with a pocket watch, suitably engraved. The manager, Mr A. J. Wilson, and Mr A. E. Weaver, a senior member of the staff of the linotype department, paid tribute to the faithful and efficient service given to the Evening Star by Mr Gunn, and the presentation was made by Mr Weaver, who was associated with Mr Gunn for a lengthy period. Mr Gunn thanked the manager and his associates for their kindly references and their gift. In the course of his reply he traced, the development of the Evening Star from the time it occupied premises Jn Tainui street (when, he started with the newspaper), and recounted anecdotes and . incidents in his long association with the firm. Mr Gunn joined the publishing department in 1892 and shortly afterwards became a compositor, when all type for the newspaper was hand-set. He was engaged on the first linotype machines purchased by the company in 1904, and from then until his retirement this year was a linotype operator.
