CRICKET JOHN REID IS EXPECTED TO MAKE N.Z. TEAM
The manager of the New Zealand cricket team to tour England next yea*. Mr J. Phillipps echoed the thoughts of all who saw* the Hutt-Wellington colts cricket match recently when he said at thp luncheon: “I don't know whether hl wm be ahead of me, or behind me I but going up that gangway somewhei will be John Reid.” . „ Although Reid had his moments of indecision early-he snicked one: or- two throu°h slips—he quickly settled down and after he reached double figures he looked as immovable at the wickets ps a well-seasoned test player. "Those who attended the game expected Reid to make runs but few would have gone so far as to foiecast a century. However, after he had suited bis fist few overs, most spectators looked on the century as inevitable. He had moments of respect for all the bowlers, but eventually he mastered all, and nobody was spared the subsequent Ijl ?ncidentllly, most of the bowlers came in for more punishment than they deserved The boundary on one side of the field was a mere 29 yards from the wicket. It was very dishea tening for one bowler to sec a good delivery miss-hit on the off for 6 However the short boundary does not in any way reflect on Reid s century. On the day &nd against the bowling, he would have scored it under pretty well dny circumstances. He used just about every shot in the bag,-and when he decided to hit-and those occasions became increasingly frequent—the ball really travelled from his powerful strokes. _ . , . . The innings gave Reid a great stait for the season.
