HIGHWAYS BOARD TO VISIT WEST COAST NEXT MONTH

In the course of a tour of the northern portion of the South Island, members of the. Highways Board will visit Greymouth on November 17 and will meet representatives of the various district local bodies and other interested organisations. Advice to this effect was received from the board’s district representative, Mr A. B. Bremner, at last night’s meeting of the council of the West Coast branch of the Automobile Association, Canterbury. The council appointed Messrs G. R. Harker (president), T. Blackie, W-. F. Harley and D. Friedlander as its delegation to meet the board at Greymouth. It was decided to place the following matters before the board: —Improvement to the approaches to the Little Waitaha (South Westland) deviation; the straightening of the highway between Ruatapu and Ross; broken" handrails on. a number of bridges in the district; improvements to the highways at the Reefton and Rahu saddles; the necessity for improvements to the road over Cemetery hill, Ross, or a deviation; sealing of the Runanga-Rapahoe road and improvements at Falkenback’s corner; a telephone system on the Otira Gorge road and the bridging of Broad creek, on the same road. The council also decided to request the Tourist Department to place in order the road and the tracks leading to Lake Matheson, South Westland and to draw the attention of the Brunner Borough Council and the Grey County Council to the surface of the Stillwater-Kotuku road. Mr B. W. Caulton suggested that the council might discuss the question of additional petrol being made available for caravan owners, but the secretary (Mr Harley) pointed out that the matter had already been taken up by the South Island Motor Union and he did not think anything more could be done in the meantime. Some discussion also took place on parking problems in the business area of Greymouth but no decisions were reached, the chairman remarking that he thought there would, be some improvement as a result of the Borough Council’s discussion with the Transport Department officers.
