DEATH OF GERMAN FIELD-MARSHAL
LONDON, October 19. The Hamburg correspondent of the Associated Press says that the death is announced of Field-Marshal Walter von Brauchitsch, a former Commander-in-Chief of the German Army. He died in a British military hospital, where he was being held under guard awaiting trial as a war criminal. He was 67.
Heavy Rain More than 13 inches of rain has fallen at Greymouth during the past four weeks and of this about six inches has been recorded in the past week. Showers rivalling those last Friday fell during a southerly storm yesterday, when 1.80 inches of rain fell in 24 hours. As a result of the heavy rain, which has brought the year’s total from 53 to 66.78 inches in a month, the Grey river was swollen today and a six-knot current -was recorded. Rough seas at the harbour entrance have also closed the port, but with the only ship due sheltering up the coast and the two in port unable to complete loading operations on account of work being interrupted by rain, shipping movements are not affected by the ban.
