ROY STEVENS HAS RETIRED FROM

THE BOXING RING (P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Roy Stevens’s match with Jackie Marr in the Wellington Town Hall last night was his last as a professional boxer, according to Gus Venn, Stevens’s trainer. The decision was made last week, regardless of the result of last night’s fight. Venn said that 26-year-old Stevens, holder of the national middleweight title, was young enough to keep going, but did not consider it worth his while financially. There were not sufficient suitable opponents in New Zealand to justify Stevens devoting his full time to training. The loss of wages during training was hardly balanced by the purses when taxation and training’ and travelling expenses were considered. Marr defeated Stevens on points in last night’s bout in Wellington. The decision met with a mixed reception.
