RACE MEETING AT ADDINGTON FOR THE KING
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Pleasant recollections of a trotting meeting at Addington during his visit to Christchurch as Duke of York in 1927 resulted in His Majesty expressing a wish that he should have the opportunity of attending a trotting meeting on his visit next year. This remark was made at Buckingham Palace to Mr J. W. Heenan when he was discussing plans for the Royal visit, said the president of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club (Mr C. S. Thomas) today. A first-class programme would be arranged for the meeting on the basis of a full day’s racing, although the Royal visitors would attend from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. only, said Mr Thomas. The main event would be the King George VI Cup, the conditions of which had so far not been settled, although a special gold cup was being imported as a trophy for the winning owner. The other races on the programme would be the Queen Elizabeth Handicap and the Princess Margaret Handicap. The big races would be run during the time that the Royal party was present.
