Chess Tourney in Holland
Reuter’s Baarn correspondent says that R. G. Wade (New Zealand) drew with Spanjaard (Holland) in the second round of the international chess tournament. At the end of the second day Wade is in seventh position, with half a point. Golombek (Britain) leads with two points—London. October 18.
Hitler’s Chancellery Hitler’s Chancellery, which he built for himself in the late thirties, is to be razed by the Russians, according to a report from the Russian zone of Berlin. The Russians have already ripped out the fine Italian and Bavarian marbles and the rich woodwork. The marble has gone into big memorials to the Russian Army in Berlin. What is left will be dismantled and salvaged for building materials or blown up.—London, October 17.
Basic Wage to be Raised Beginning from the first pay period in November, there will be an increase of 3s per week in the basic wage for Melbourne and Hobart; 4s a week for Perth; and 2s a week for Adelaide, Sydney, and Brisbane. The basic wages for the capital cities will then be. Sydney £6 2s; Melbourne £6; Brisbane £5 15s; Adelaide and Perth £5 16s; Hobart £5 13s.—Melbourne, October 18.
