BIG INCREASE IN dairy production IN SOUTHLAND AREA
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, This Day. Remarkable increases m dair J hl P and duction were recorded.. m Southland during the first month of the new season, compared with the figures for the qpme month last year and it is esti mated that the overall increase is well over 30 per cent. It is pointed, out however, that because of weather the milk is coming to hand much earlier this season and the factories cannot hope to maintain such huge increases in production, but many factory managers are expecting to have a better return at the end of the season than they did last year. One group of seven cheese factories which gives a good cross section of production in the province, had an overall increase of 104 per cent for September, compared with the corresponding month of last year. Giving these figures, the secretary of the companies concerned said that because oi the mild winter and the exceptionally •favourable spring the factories had made a much earlier start than usual. Another indication of the early season this year is the fact that for the first time in history Southland Cool Stores Ltd received cheese into their stores in September. . Old-established farmers consider the season is one of the best in. memory. Pastures are in excellent order and stock are in splendid condition.
