RESEARCH WORK ON PARALYSIS TO BE INTENSIFIED

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, October 18. Recommendations for the intensification of poliomyelitis research in New Zealand were approved at the conference of research authorities, held at the Otago Medical School on Saturday. . The recommendations were dratted by the Dean of the school (Sir Charles Hercus), the chairman of the microbiology committee of the Medical Research Council (Dr N. L. Edson) , and the chief research officer for thyroid research of the council (Dr H. D. Purves). Dr Purves returned to Dunedin towards the end of last week after studying the epidemic in Wellington. The recommendations will be made to the Minister of Health (Miss ,M. B. Howard) through the chairman of the Medical Research Council, and a statement on the recommendations or action proposed by the Department of Health will be made, it is expected, by the Minister. The investigation recommended into poliomyelitis in New Zealand was the intensification of existing research not the launching of a new field of work, said Dr Purves. Laboratory research into the disease has been done in the Otago Medical School for some time by members of the staff of the virus research department.
