EDEN APPEALS FOR UNITY IN STRUGGLE WITH COMMUNISTS

LONDON, October 16. The publication of the British Government’s White Paper on the Berlin negotiations revealed in detail “the Jekyll and Hyde technique of Soviet diplomacy during the recent talks in Moscow,” said Mr Anthony Eden, M.P., in a speech to his constituents today. He said it was obvious now that the basic struggle between the Soviet and the Western Powers was for collapse or recovery in Europe. “Even as Mr Stalin, Mr Molotov, and Mr Vyshinsky protest that Russia’s only aim is a peaceful settlement in Europe, the agents of the Cominform help the Communists in Greece and provide money to back strikes in France,” said Mr Eden. “The Kremlin does not want the Marshall Plan to succeed. Its success would put an end to all hopes of a Communist triumph based on poverty and fear. It is for this reason that the Conservatives have been urging the Government again and again to build up the Western Union with all possible speed.” Referring to the Commonwealth Prime Ministry’s. Conference, Mr Eden said: “We may be sure that the problems which affect us so deeply in Europe are also of deep concern to th Commonwealth countries. By relating the three systems of the British Commonwealth, the Western Unicn, and the United States, we have the answer to the world-wide Communist challenge. In the meantime was must close our ranks against the fifth columns in our midst.”
