MELBOURNE WITHOUT BREAD:SYDNEY SHORT OF POTATOES
(Rec. 11.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day.
While Sydney is suffering from a potato famine, Melbourne is without bread. „ 2 The New South Wales Potato Marketing Board states that, instead of the normal supply of 2Mb per person weekly, there will be only enough potatoes for the next three "weeks to provide a lib per person weekly. Supplies cannot be obtained from other States, because the fixed New South Wales price of 2ld per lb tor new potatoes is considered by the growers to be too low. A strike of the Operative Bakers Union has deprived Melbourne, Bendigo, Geelong, Ballarat and Mildura of bread. Emergency supplies are being baked for hospitals. The strike concerns hours of commencing work.
