COMMUNIST LEADER MURDERED BY HIS OWN REBELS
(Recd. 11.20 a.m.) BATAVIA, Oct. 17. Dr Amir Sjarifuddin, former Republican Socialist Premier and reported Prime Minister of the rebel Indonesian Communist Republic, which was proclaimed on September 30 has been murdered, according to an Antara News Agency message from Jogjakarta. Dr Sjarifuddin was murdered by his f own rebel supporters.
The report also said that the former Labour vice-premier of the Republic, Dr Setiadjit had been killed by Republican forces in anti-Com-munist operations. He was killed near Surakarta, an important city in Com-munist-troubled Republican Java. The murder of Dr Sjarifuddin is said to have happened as Communist rebel leaders endeavoured to converge on Jogjakarta to surrender, following the successes of Republican troops against the rebel forces. The only important Communist so far taken is the Moscow-trained veteran leader, Alimin. Muso, who came from Moscow last August, and led the revolt against the Republican Hatta Government, is still unaccounted for.
