COLDSTREAM GUARDS IN FIRST ACTION IN MALAYA
(Rec. 2.10 p.m.) SINGAPORE, Oct. 17
The Coldstream Guards went into action for the first time in Malaya this week-end. Together with police and members of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, a detachment of Coldstream Guards, raided a terrorist hide-out near Bidor, south Perak. They were seeking terrorists who killed four soldiers earlier this month. They shot dead one terrorist and wounded four others, who escaped into the jungle. Altogether four Chinese terrorists were killed in Malaya today and a constable and two Chinese were murdered. The Royal Air Force in the last 48 hours launched its biggest attack so far against terrorist hide-outs in the west Pahang jungle. Spitfires and Beaufighters carried out attacks with bombs, rockets, and cannon. In North Perak the police and military yesterday launched a big offensive to clear up the worst trouble centre in Malaya, in the notorious Sungei Siput area, near Ipoh. The forces evacuated 500 Chinese squatters who were believed to be concealing and aiding the terrorists and burned down 100 of their huts.
