MEAT EXPORTS DOWN FOR LAST SEASON
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 16. New Zealand’s export meat production for the 1947-48 season, which ended on September 30, was 34.7,036 tons of shipping weight, 7788 tons less than last season’s record output. The figures have been released by New Zealand Producers’ Board. Killings were maintained at a high level in’ the early stages of the season, but a drought which developed later in northern districts was responsible for a falling away of outPU South Island production succeeded last year, but was not sufficient to offset the loss in the north. The outstanding feature of the season was the New Zealand recoid output of lamb for export. The season’s total of lamb shipped was 11,956,279 carcasses, an increase of 557,400 over last season’s figures, and 55,715 over the previous record, established in 1945-46. Sheep killings weye down, possibly because of a tendency among farmers to withhold stock for wool purposes. The average carcase weights for lamb and mutton, also failed to achieve last year’s levels. _
