SERIOUS ASSAULT ON YOUNG WOMAN ALLEGED

A serious assault is alleged to have been committed on a young woman at Hanmer Springs early yesterday morning. The woman, who works at Hanmer Springs, was returning home from a dance in the township when she was assaulted. When the woman stopped a party going down a road at Hanmer about 1.30 a.m. she was in an extremely agitated condition. She is reported to have suffered some bruises in a struggle with a man. The party made an unsuccessful search for the man and notified the police. The constable at Hanmer reported the ’matter to the Central Police Station, Christchurch. Full inquiries and a widespread search for the offender were put in hand by the Superintendent of Police in Christchurch (Mr D. J. O’Neill). Before 5 a.m. detectives and policemen left Christchurch for Hanmer by a police radio car. Constables at outlying stations were warned to keep a look-out for a suspect. After inquiries and a search lasting all day a man was arrested last evening and was brought to Christchurch. He will be charged with assault with,intent to commit rape.
