Douglas Bachli (Victoria) putted his way to a convincing win, 7 and 6 to play, over Peter Heard (New South Wales) in the final of the Australian amateur golf championship at the Metropolitan links yesterday. Bachli’s win was not surprising. He won the Queensland amateur title early this year and has since had a string oi victories in important amateur events. The accuracy of his iron shots ana almost perfect putting kept Bachli well on top throughout yesterdays 36-hole match. In spite of a strong wind, he covered the pin with almost every approach and sank putts for wins and halves from distances up to 50 feet. With such perfect golf he led 5 up after the first nine holes in the afternoon. The only time Heard looked like pressing him was when he won the seventh and eighth holes in the afternoon—the seventh with a stymie and the eighth with a 25-foot putt for a birdie 3. Neither Heard nor Bachli will play in the Australian open championship, which will begin ’at Kingston Heath next Thursday. Heard is unable to spare the time from his business, and Bachli neglected to lodge an entry in time.
