HOFFMAN MEETS BEVIN ON REPARATIONS ISSUE

(Rec. 10 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. .3. The chief administrator of the American Economic Co-operation Administration, Mr Paul Hoffman, who has arrived from Paris, had an early meeting with Mr Ernest Bevin in the Foreign Office. The head of the administration’s mission in Paris, Mr Averell Harriman, and the United States Ambassador, Mr Lewis Douglas, accompanied Mr Hoffman. It is believed that Mr Hoffman and Mr Bevin discussed the dismantling of German industrial equipment for reparations, over which Britain and the United States have differed. Mr Hoffman has discussed this matter with the French Foreign Minister, M. Schuman, in Paris. Reuter’s Paris correspondent says the French Foreign Office issued a communique which said: “France, in close agreement with Britain, remains anxious to see carried out the speedy dismantling and transfer to the countries which were victim’s of the war of the factories entered on the repartions list in accordance with the Principles established by the Allies. The Foreign Affairs Minister, however, has recognised that in certain particular cases the lists must be reviewed to take into consideration the advantage or even inconvenience which might result from the transfer of certain machinery.”
