NATIONALIST ARMY DRIVES COMMUNISTS FROM MAJOR CENTRE

SHANGHAI, October 12

Breaking the series of recent major Communist victories, the Chinese Government’s new 6th Army stormed into Changwu, an important Communist communication centre 65 miles north-west of Mukden, and battered the defenders into submission after a struggle which lasted all day, according to pro-Government reports to-day. Semi-official reports claim that besides inflicting “heavy casualties” on the Communist garrison the American-trained and equipped 6th Army men, most of whom are veterans of the Burma campaign, captured a large quantity of arms, ammunition, and other vital materials Government troops yielded further ground round Chinchow, in the Manchurian corridor, and on the outskirts of Taiyuan, the capital of Shansi Province.
