1946 YEAR BOOK PUBLISHED AT LAST

The 1946 edition of the New Zealand Official Year Book has made a belated appearance. The volume, compiled by the Census and Statistics Department, has in the past usually appeared in the year to which it refers, and in a preface to the 1946 edition the Government Statistician, Mr G. A. Wood, mentions “unavoidable delays” in the issue. , The newest volume, of nearly 1000 pages, is larger than usual. Tire section on vital statistics has been expanded by the addition of two sub-sections dealing with vital occurrences in the Maori population and the whole population. A sub-section on surveys, last included in 1942, has reappeared, and there are also an analysis of the last general election results and a note on the National Film Unit, and an analysis of New Zealand’s external trade during the war. The appendices include an analysis of results of the 1945 census of population, and the bibliography has been extended to include all the more notable works published since >1912., There is a special article on the Alexander Turnbull library. “The present issue covers, in essentials, the material which would be included in the 1946-48 issues,” the preface says. “It is hoped to resume a normal publishing programme with the next issue of the Year Book.” Mr Wood adds that later information has become available on a variety of subjects since the earlier sections were printed. To meet this position a special section is included in which recent statistics on the more important social and economic subjects are included and discussed, with appropriate references to the material in the body of the book.
