British Commonwealth And European Federation
NEW YORK, Oct. 11.
“The decisions at the British Commonwealth Conference in London will profoundly influence the development of the projected European federation urged by the United States,” says the New York Times in a leading article. “On the question of forming a real federation Britain has been more than hesitant because of the necessity of reconciling its Commonwealth and Empire interests with those of a federated Europe. But the Russian threat is so. real and the need for European unity for both economic and defence reasons so urgent, that the idea of a United States of Europe is bound to go marching on, if necessary on a Continental basis, with Britain as an ally if not a member. “Any other course would lead towards the subjugation of Europe under the Russian heel, and that might also mean the end of the British Commonwealth.”
