Title-holder’s Defeat In Golf Tourney

(P.A.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. Playing the type of golf that befits a former New Zealand champion, Mrs J. Ball (Wanganui) beat the present title-holder, Miss E. Wilkinson (Grange), by three and one m the sqmi-fhials of the New Zealand women’s singles championships, which was played at Hokowhitu this morning. Mrs Ball thus avenged her defeat at last year’s championships at Hamilton, when Miss Wilkinson beat her by four and three in the quarter-finals. . In the other semi-finals, Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch) caused something of a surprise by beating Mrs G. W. Hollis (Titirangi) by the comfortable margin of four and two Miss Buchanan and Mrs Ball will meet in the final to be played over 36 holes tomorrow. , Mrs Ball, who had a brilliant outward nine of 36, par figures, was never really in danger of defeat. She was two up at the turn and held a lead of four up after the 12th hole. Miss Wilkinson’s game was again marred by the inconsistency which has characterised her play throughout the tournament. In a game characterised by solid play, Miss H, Buchanan (Christchurch) won convincingly from Mrs G. W. Hollis (Titirangi), a former champion, the match finishing 4 and 2. The winner gave a good exhibition, but with all her shots was a little distance off the line. On the other hand, Mrs Hollis was not playing as well as she has done. Mrs Hollis beat Miss Buchanan, 7 and 6, in the interisland match. NZ. Championship. — Semi-fmals: Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch) beat Mrs G. W. Hollis (Titirangi), 4 and 2; Mrs J. Ball (Wanganui) beat Miss E. Wilkinson (Grange), 3 and 1. New Zealand Plate.—Semi-finals: Miss C. Smith (Invercargill) beat Mrs N J. Ellison (Hutt), 2 and 1; Mrs D. A.
