BULLER PROPOSAL FOR NEW COAST HOSPITAL SERVICE

On the recommendation of the surgeon-superintendent, the Grey Hospital Board last evening discussed in committee a proposal from the Buller Hospital Board that it should participate in a conference of all the West Coast boards, to be held at Westport, to consider the appointment of a consulting ■ physician for the province, on the lines of the present service given by the .travelling orthopaedic surgeon. Authority was given for the chairman (Mr A. Mosley), the secretary (Mr W. H. J. Watson), and the sur-geon-superintendent (Dr S. Barclay) to attend the Hospital Boards’- Association conference in May next, and for the board’s engineer (Mr J. D. Kelly) to attend the engineers’ conference in Napier. On the recommendation of the matron (Miss N. P. Moffatt) and the surgeon-superintendent, it was decided that Sister- M. O’Grady be given leave to attend, at the board s expense, a refresher course for ward sisters, to be held in Wellington in February. Sister G. M. Allitt was appointed night, sister at the hospital, on the recommendation of the matron. It was reported that arrangements had been made to show educational films to pupil purses and a projector had been made available by the West Coast Swimming Centre. It was directed that the question of making suitable payment for hire of the projector be left to the managing secretary. It was reported that a special film and lecture dealing with nursing recruitment would be presented to the senior girl pupils of the Greymouth Convent. The Greymputh Technical High School was also included in the arrangements, but as the school is closed on account of the poliomyelitis epidemic, the arrangement could not be proceeded with. Progress had been slow with the major works provided for on the estimates, stated Mr Watson in his report, but the contractor had now commenced work on the theatre annexe building.
