MORE SHIPPING POSSIBLE FOR SMALLER PORTS
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, This Day. The possibility of decentralising some of New Zealand’s shipping to smaller ports was discussed by the Minister of Marine, Mr Hackett, at the annual conference of the Harbours’ Association. Because the association’s outlook was one of national welfare, the Minister asked the conference to express an opinion on the proposal. _ . . “We have in this Dominion some very good ports, which have not been used since shipping was centralised for war purposes,” said Mr Hackett. “These are ports which with the expenditure of a little money could prove themselves a national asset it given the opportunity. I fully realise the obstacles that have to be overcome, such as the establishment of rail heads, and negotiations . are necessary with the Overseas Shipowners’ Allotment Committee, hut, asked the Minister, “are those obstacles to be considered insurmountable ? ’ ’ _______
