COMMUNIST LEADER IN AUSTRALIA SENTENCED TO GAOL
BRISBANE, Oct. 12
Gilbert Burns, a member of the executive of the Queensland Communist Party, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment today by the Brisbane Summons Court on a charge of sedition brought against him under the Crimes Act. Notice of appeal against the sentence was given. It is claimed that at a public meeting on September 15 Burns said. If Australia was involved in a third world war, that war would be between Soviet Russia and American and British imperialism. It would be a coun-ter-revolutionary war. We Communists would oppose that war and would fight on the side of the Soviet Union.” Counsel for Burns has indicated that he will not call evidence.
