SURGICAL REGISTRAR TO BE SOUGHT FOR GREY HOSPITAL
The Grey Hospital Board at its meeting last evening decided to add a surgical registrar to its staff and to advertise the position, the appointment in the first instance to be for 12 months, with the right to reapply for a further appointment. A recommendation that such an appointment be made was placed before the board by the visiting committee, as a matter arising out of the surgeon-superintendent’s report. Relief for Superintendent Clarifying the recommendation, the chairman (Mr A. Mosley) said it was planned to relieve the surgeonsuperintendent (Dr S. Barclay) of some of his many duties, to enable some of the work between the major work and that of tl)e house surgeon to be done without the surgeonsuperintendent having to attend to it. To put it in his own words, the surgeon-superintendent would then be able to say that he worked a 50 or 60-hour week, instead of the many more he was working at the present time.
The recommendation was adopted without discussion. Massage Assistant
The board also endorsed a recommendation from thie visiting committee that a trained assistant be obtained for the massage department. The chairman said that the work of the department had shown a vast increase, from 300 treatments per month in 1943-44 to 473 in 1947-48 and so far this year the figure was 5/7. The increase in the number of treatments given in the department was thus two-thirds since 1943 and no further explanation was required to show that some qualified assistance -was required. “I am sure none of us realised how the. work had increased,” added Mr Mosley. “One has only got to attend the massage department to see the amount of work being done/’ commented Mr F. J. Oakley. Mr J. Stokes said he would like to ask the surgeon-superintendent whether there was room and facilities in the department for another qualified assistant.
Dr Barclay: The answer is that two people can work there without being held up, but working conditions are on a par with those in the older parts of the hosiptal. Sister J. M. Cleary wrote accepting the bursary offered by the board to undertake Plunket training and agreeing to remain for two years in the ernplpy of the board.
