U.S. EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION IN NEW ZEALAND

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The first meeting of the board of the United States Educational Foundation in New Zealand, which has been appointed to administer an educational programme to be financed by funds made available undei- the lend-lease settlement between the United States and New Zealand, was presided over by the honorary chairman, the United States Minister, Mr R. M. Scotten. Two sub-committees were ap £ ’ pointed to draft a budget for the first year so that the plan can be put into operation and to make suggestions concerning students and professors, both American and New Zealanders, to whom the benefits of the scheme might be applied.

The Minister said that all the recommendations would have to be submitted under the agreement to the Board of Foreign Scholarships set up by the United States Secretary of State to administer the Fulbright Agreement and, accordingly, any decisions made by that body would have to be submitted to the board in New Zealand.

One outcome from the meeting is that a public affairs officer, who will later act as chairman of the board, in New Zealand, will arrive from the United States, and the Minister indicated that that would necessitate re-establishing the legation’s information service, which was disbanded last year.
