BREACH OF CONTRACT ALLEGED AGAINST WOMEN IMMIGRANTS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Two young English girls, Joan McHugh and Cecila Power and the mother of one of them, Martha Ellen McHugh—all assisted immigrants—were sued in the Magistrate’s Court today by Matheson Minster Ltd., clothing manufacturers, for alleged breaches of contract.
The plaintiff company claimed that it agreed to pay two-thirds of the defendants’ fare to New Zealand provided they worked in the company’s factory for three years. The defendants had started at the factory in June 1947 and left in May this year. The damages claimed from the defendants were £74 Is 8d in the case of the girls and £7B 6s 8d from Mrs McHugh. The hearing is proceeding.
